Chapter Fourteen

“I’m sorry. I don’t like her.”

Addy drew in a long, deep breath at her brother’s words, locking down the words threatening to spill out. The summer had been dragging by. And in combination with the diner having its busiest tourist season ever, that was a feat. Addy ran around all day. Delaynee was working full time, and they’d even hired a couple other high-schoolers to help out. And yet, Addy could not figure out why time didn’t pass more quickly. Every day should pass in a whirlwind of friends and new customers and the excitement of people discovering Little River.

And now, in September, when she could see the light at the end of the tunnel. When she had finally found the perfect, full-time employee fill in for her and … maybe, someday, take her place, Ben was raining—no, pouring—on her parade.

The sarcasm couldn’t be contained any longer. There weren’t any patrons in the diner. They opened later on Sunday mornings, so she’d come in to talk to him before he unlocked the doors.

“Is it that she’s better at math than me?”

Marissa, the full-time waitress Addy had hired over the summer to test out as possible management material, could add checks in her head, even though that wasn’t necessary given the tablets they all carried around. It was still impressive. Ben opened his mouth to retort, but Addy went on. “Or is it because she tells better jokes than me. She’s really witty—I get that’s hard to swallow from a pretty woman. She should dumb it down.”

“Don’t be—”

“I’ve got it!” Addy had been putting up with his bad temper over her relationship for too long to let him defend himself now. “It’s that she dresses too appropriately for work. Nice, professional black pants with her pink Diner button-up. And yeah, her shoes do tend more toward practical, but I am going to ask her where she gets such great looking tennis shoes.”

“Are you done?”

“Are you? I’m still part-owner of this diner, just like you wanted, and Marissa’s salary as an assistant manager is being covered by my share, so at this point, you’re just being petty.” She folded her arms and eyed her brother. Worst case scenario, Addy would have to cut her trip down by a week or two and figure out a way for Delaynee and Mrs. Roberts to cover her shifts while she was gone. But she’d been so sure that Marissa was the solution. She’d been looking all summer, trying out multiple people. Marissa was perfect, and everything had been going smoothly—except for in Ben’s mind.

“I actually have to work with her, Addy. I’m not the one flouncing off to Europe while someone else does my job. And it’s not a good fit for me.” He leaned up against the metal prep table that separated the stove from the doorway, giving her a what-can-I-do shrug that was way too innocent.

“Funny, you did not give me this same lecture when I flounced off to Alaska with Mom and Dad for two months.
